Falls are by far the most common cause of injuries for elderly Australians. Approximately one in every three people aged 65 or over has at least one fall per year. Falls are even more common among residents in aged care facilities with up to 50% of the residents falling at least once a year. Fall-related injury constitutes a major cause of morbidity and mortality for older people and incurs staggering costs to the public healthcare system.

Falls are however preventable. Among the major modifiable physical risk factors of falls are deficit in lower limb muscle force and strength of knee and ankle extensors; limited motion range; poor coordinated postural stability; poor proprioception and gait pattern; poor toe clearance; lack of confidence and fear of falling. There is compelling research evidence suggesting that Tai Chi intervention can effectively reduce the risk of falls and prevent falls.

Jointly developed by Professor Ehrlich, an expert in geriatrics and falls prevention at the University of New South Wales; Alice Liping Yuan, a leading international Tai Chi authority at Exercise Medicine Australia; and Dr Henry Zheng, a research fellow in physical activity for population health, the Tai Chi for Health and Falls Prevention Program is an evidence-based, safe and targeted Tai Chi intervention program designed to effectively increase the strength of lower limb muscles and knee and ankle extensors; improve mobility, flexibility and coordination; improve dynamic balance and postural control; maintain bone mass and reduce the risk of bone fracture; improve toe clearance, proprioception and gait pattern; reduce reaction time; increase mental alertness; boost confidence and overcome anxiety and the fear of falling.

The program has been widely used by state and local governments as part of the national falls prevention initiative.
